Being unemployed for close to 11 months now, frankly, I will start to doubt myself on my capability. It has been a rollercoaster ride for me. Even my positivity doesn't shine like the sun when it gets bad. But something did lift me up. I didn't give up hope. Kindness does help, in the form of free webinars by professionals who gave patience, time, and expert advice. It became a fruitful time to reflect on my destination and to do what I love doing. Connecting back with my creativity, I actually wrote two ebooks and started my sideline as a print designer. So I hope others don't give up hope and know your worth! Wonderful things can still happen! Be positive!
I left my corporate job in November 2019 in search of a career switch. I was enjoying my little freedom for a while after working continuously for about 5 years. It was in February 2020 when I figured out what’s my next step should be and the industry that I want to go into, but the COVID19 situation worsened and businesses were forced to close. I used this time to take up new hobbies (trekking, cooking & painting), these are the ones that have been on my mind for the longest time but I didn’t have the time to pursue due to work commitments. At the same time, I took up online courses as a form of professional development that will be useful for my next career. I also used this valuable time to do up my resume and connect with people in a similar industry on LinkedIn. I must say, these people whom I randomly connected on LinkedIn really gave good advice on my next step to pursue a career in the industry.
They say “Great things never came from comfort zones.” Use this time to try out new things with an open mind, have faith and good things will come your way.
I was working overseas and returned to Singapore last minute due to COVID-19. The company laid-off many employees and I had to find work in Singapore again. A kind soul set up a google form for people who have recently lost their jobs and I put my name there. That community grew so quickly to a few thousand people and many hiring managers reached out to me through that google form. Joining a community of people who are willing to share resources, help you out in your career is so important because this community eventually provided me with a job! Find a community you can turn to for support and you need not fear or feel alone in any situation.
Job hunting for fresh graduates isn't easy, even with prior working or freelancing experience. The COVID-19 pandemic more than doubled the difficulty to find a job but also gave me an opportunity to broaden my scope and adopt a more open mind when it came to looking for a full-time position. Now, I relish the opportunity to kickstart my career as I learn a new set of skills that utilize my past experience and knowledge while continuing to hone what I'm already proficient in.
During the onset of the pandemic, I started losing students and as well as performances. This was far too quick and I had to take a break for a week to rethink my profession as a Music director / Composer and a freelance flautist.
How did I cope?
I shifted performances, workshops, lessons, and recordings to digital stations. I upgraded my home studio with good microphones, speakers, and instruments. I decided to grow my networks while seeing a growth in the market. I started a "Request a Song" series which allowed me to reach out to my audiences. Secondly, I started to compose and arrange music for my band, Brahmastra and we performed a few repertoires online and as well as for digital online competitions. Additionally, I was involved with numerous local and international collaborations. I also pitched and recorded for a few international albums and background scores in India and South East Asia.
I have also ventured into background scoring as I have arranged and composed music for individual artists, bands, and ensembles. I have also started to compose a background score that is pending to be released.
