Roles & Responsibilities

Main Purpose :


The main purpose of the role is to successfully manage Drilling/Rotating equipment projects within various Sparrows Business units in APAC, ensuring that enquires and project work are allocated and processed efficiently and effectively. The incumbent will require experience in drilling systems, hydraulic, pneumatic systems and mechanical rotating equipment to understand technical complex issues and use these skills to identify the root causes, and develop effective solutions.


The incumbent is also expected to manage and develop Sparrows client base, tenders and projects, and increase project delivery performance, and contract service provision portfolio’s where possible to increase turnover.


Main Responsibilities : 

  • Participate and guide the engineering teams, Business units with the enquiry process during the stages of Evaluation of Contract Type and Strategy Bid Planning, Development of Scopes of Work, Production of Execution Plans, Production of Work Breakdown Structure, Estimating, CTRProduction, Proposal Formatting and Collation and Submission Review and Approval.
  • Review and approve larger drilling equipment procedures and risk assessments as the dedicated Technical Authority
  • Planning and prioritisation of the projects and work scopes undertaken by the Engineering teams, an understanding of Project Management stages such as Project Planning, Contract Review, Financial Control, Design/Technical review, Manufacture and Refurbishment, Work pack Preparation and Review, Implementation and Project Close out will be required.
  • Demonstrate Leadership and promote training and development of subordinates, with responsibility for the periodic appraisal of assigned subordinates.
  • Responsible for progress meeting, to review activity reviews on Project Plans and subsequent prioritisation. Participation in the weekly Engineering review meetings and project reportage to the Business unit Manager.
  • Liaison with all specialist areas in the organisation which includes Clients, Business Management to ensure achievement of the business plan.

Skills / Qualifications :

  • Master in Business Administration or equivalent
  • HNC Plant Engineering or better
  • HNC Control Technology or better
  • Previous experience managing a similar engineering teams /business units
  • Good team work ethic
  • Ability to communicate effectively on technical aspects/problems both internally and externally
  • Proven track record with adhoc client base with Drilling Contractors, FPSO Operators, Shipyards and Fixed Platform Operators
  • Proven track record of project managing MODU SPS turnkey projects
  • Ability to build strong relationships with customer base
  • Ability to mentor/coach Engineering teams as required in Drilling equipment product line
  • Experience working in/delivery of turn key Projects
  • Experience in typical MODU asset Drilling package OEM’se.g. NOV, Cameron, American Block, Weatherford
  • Experience in various offshore crane types e.g. pedestal lattice boom crane, king post crane, knuckle boom crane, box boom ram luffing crane, overhead BOP crane, pipe handing gantry crane, BOP carriers, etc
  • Experience overhauling typical rotating/Drilling components e.g. Top Drive, Draw works, Mud pumps, Iron roughneck, crown/travelling blocks, Rotary table, Deadline anchors, winches, BOP hoists etc
  • Ability to understand mechanical/hydraulic/electrical control systems on various machines
  • Good understanding on API Q2 standard and rotating equipment spec’s within
  • Good understanding of applicable design codes and legislation e.g.  ABS, DNV, etc
